As things have been a bit less busy lately, and as I am, let’s be honest, getting older, I and should slowly be thinking about my legacy on the World Wide Web, I have decided to start a new web project: Readency.com.
As you might or might not know, I love reading, particularly non-fiction – mostly philosophy of religion or ethics. As being a passive figure in the reading community, a follower, a lurker, I have noticed that the non-fiction is not so popular – and that is indeed a shame. Sure, you might say, there are a ton of blogs with authors who write about non-fiction a lot, but if you spend any time on Instagram at all, look at the reader community there.
Sure, Instagram is a visual medium driven by emotions and beautifulness, but I fail to see why that would exclude non-fiction. Non-fiction has the potential to stir emotions as good as fiction, if not better. The key is to read books that challenge you, that make you uncomfortable and make you question everything you thought you knew in a certain area,
If the book we are reading doesn’t wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? …we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide.
Franz Kafka
A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.
Sadly, people are not usually inclined to do this – and with the Services which claim to give you all the information from a 400-page book in 10 Minutes, there is even less desire to read. But as with everything in life – you can cry, or you can attempt to do something about it. So, I thought I do something about it, no matter how small, hence – readency.com. I plan to write reviews and promote delightful books that have both healed and wounded me, all with the intention of growing together with my audience – of course, if someone even visits the site at all. As they say, if you want to master something, you should start teaching it.
But, even with everything above, I am not and will not be a stranger to fiction. I like fiction as well and you should expect to find some fiction there as well, in time. It’s just that writing reviews of fiction will not be the sites primary reason for existence.
Enough talk. In summary: I have started a new blogging site, it’s about books and reading, it will mostly contain non-fiction and I hope it will have some tiny, small positive impact on the world – if nothing else, then because I hope it will make me a better person and I after all, live with other humans in what we call a society. I hope you will take 30 seconds out of your busy day to pay readency.com a visit. See you there.
